Review Week 6

What is the pen tool used for?
The pen tool is used to make accurate lines and curves.
How can you manipulate a path/line in Illustrator? Discuss the use of the white arrow tool, pen+, pen-, and convert too.
Using the subselection arrow, click on the anchor you wish to change and move it as you wish. The pen+ tool allows you to add anchors, while the pen- tool allows you to remove anchors. The path can then be converted into a line or shape.

How can you utilize the layers palette in Illustrator?
You can have different elements or parts of elements of the design on individual layers. you can then choose to hide them from view or lock them in place. Locked layers cannot be manipulated until they are unlocked.

How do you create a clipping mask in Adobe Illustrator?
Create a shape over the items you wish to clip. then select everything you wish to clip plus the shape over it, and go into object>Clipping Mask>Make.

Examples of the 5 elements of design

Shape

This older drug advertisement shows a proper demonstration of space. It shows three different drugs, each in their own cube. The sides display a brief description of what the drug does, and also what might also be in it.

Value

This image, part of an ad campaign for Apple's iPod, is a good demonstration of Value. The silhouette is supposed to give the audience a message that they will feel this good if they use the product.

Space

This is a good demonstration of space. It gives the audience a chance to rest their eyes on other parts of the ad.

Texture

This ad is a good example of texture. It looks as if one could really feel the grass seen in the ad, or the pavement/dirt.

Line

This design is an example of lines. The rainbow seen is not curved, like natural rainbows, and is zig-zagging downward. It is supposed to mean something, but I personally cannot see it.

The images seen in this entry were found on Google for the use of examples.

Review Week 4

Why/how can icons be used to communicate?
They can be used to briefly and quickly symbolize an idea or theme.

Via the internet, find 2 examples of common icons that clearly communicate their message. Post both in this entry.

This icon stands for "Handicap Accessible".

This icon means stop. It is so universally recognized, that it does not require the word to be effective.

Public Domain material is not held by a copyright owner. Anyone can use it without owner permission.

How can you avoid plagiarism in this class? In other classes?
By either giving credit to the original artist and putting material into your own words, or simply not using the material at all.

Understanding the history, culture and movements of fine and graphic arts will make you a better producer of visual messages. Why?
It will aid in creating a product if the client wants an older style of message portrayed.

Podcast #1 Elements of Design

What does it take to create good graphic design?
A knowledge and understanding of Graphic Design.

What is the difference between elements and principles?
Elements are compotents or parts of which can be isolated in any visual design.
Principals state how we organize those elements.

What can lines aid in, when alone or combined with  other lines or shapes?
They can aid in the readability appearance, and message of a design.

Which lines suggest a feeling of rest? Why do you think?
Horizontal lines.

Vertical lines communicate a feeling of what? Why do you think?
Loftiness.

What lines suggest a feeling of movement? Why do you think?
Diagonal.

Soft, shallow curved lines suggest what? Why do you think?
Comfort, safety, and relaxation.

These lines suggest confusion and turbulence? Why do you think?
Deep, acute curves.

The actual surface of a design with the reader actually being able to feel the texture of the paper and materials in the printed version.

It can aslo be implied through the use of layered graphics designed to give the illusion of texture in a 2D design.

Incorporating texture into a design can help do what?
Create a feeling of richness and depth.

What is value?
The degree of light and dark in a design. The contrast between black and white and all the tones inbetween. It can also be used with color. Gives objects depth and perception.

It can convey moods, create images, attract attention, and identify objects. It can be applied to any other element.

Intro Goals

I decided to take this class because I want to get into a good art school, plus I want to do something in school I'm somewhat good at.

My goals for this class is to continue learning how to use different programs and using them efficiently. In other words, bettering myself for the work world.
